Temple Warning Inscription (the soreg balustrade) (Herod's Temple, Jerusalem, c. 23 BC – AD 70). One of the stone notices set into the barrier that separated the Court of the Gentiles from the inner courts. Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau found the complete tablet in 1871 near the al-Atim Gate; a second, cruder fragment was found in 1936 by J. H. Iliffe outside the Lions' Gate. That the warning is in Greek — the common tongue of the eastern empire rather than of the priesthood — shows whom it was aimed at. It is the stone behind the charge that nearly cost Paul his life: "he hath brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place" (Acts 21:28).
