Codex Argenteus (Wulfila's Gothic version, copied in Ostrogothic Italy, c. AD 520, from a 4th-century translation). The Silver Book: the Gospels in Gothic, written in silver and gold ink on purple-stained vellum for an Ostrogothic king. Wulfila made the translation in the fourth century and reportedly left out the books of Kings, judging his people warlike enough already. 187 of its 336 leaves survive, and they are the largest surviving text in any East Germanic language — a whole branch of the family tree that is otherwise almost silent. The manuscript is at Uppsala; this is Uppström's 1854 edition, which established the readings.
